Omarchy for Computer Dads

Posted on May 7, 2026

Omarchy is an amazing distro for “computer dads” like me, and if you’re a computer dad, I’d highly recommend giving Omarchy a try.

What, you might be wondering, is a computer dad? A computer dad is a dad who enjoys computers. A computer dad probably has a job in software development, IT, data science, or some similar field. A computer dad can operate a computer from the terminal with at least some confidence. A computer dad also plays computer games. A computer dad has some level of expertise regarding computers greater than that of the average person, and, consequently, opinions about what they want in a computer.

Perhaps obviously, a computer dad has kids – probably kids who are still fairly young. And because of their job in software/data-science/IT and their young kids and their other obligations and hobbies, a computer dad doesn’t have as much time as he would like to spend playing or tinkering on his computer.

I have no idea how many people fit this description. I imagine it’s quite a few. At the very least, I know I do.

I’ve been daily driving Omarchy for about 5 months now, and I think it’s the perfect distro for people like me – people who enjoy computers, who are at least somewhat technically proficient (i.e. who can do most basic tasks from the command line without fear of accidentally nuking their machine), who want a beautiful, usable Linux machine without having to spend days ricing it (but who also want the option of ricing it). People who can debug software issues if necessary but would obviously rather not do so regularly. People who are tired of Windows but still want to be able to fire up Steam and play games with their boys after the kids are in bed. People who futz around with coding side projects for maybe 45 minutes here and there a couple of nights a week.

Omarchy is awesome for these kids of people.

I could write about how beautiful the themes are, as well as how the theme colors integrate across most of the apps I use. I could write about how easy it is to install and uninstall and update software. I could write about how pretty much everything just works (at least on my machine). I could write about how easy it is to customize things (n.b. that the only thing I’ve put much time into customizing is my Waybar). But the Omarchy Manual does a way better job than I could, as does DHH’s walkthrough video.

So if you consider yourself a computer dad – watch the video, read the manual, give Omarchy a spin. I’m really enjoying it.
